Wahoo

Not many people actually target wahoo. Most of these fish are incidental catches. But in recent years, wahoo has become one of my favorites. It’s absolutely my preferred fish to eat with the whitest, flakiest, mouth-watering meat.

Wahoo are among the fastest creatures in the sea and can accelerate up to speeds of 50 mph in just seconds. We troll for them, setting out a spread of plugs, skirted baits, natural rigged baits and naked ballyhoo. When wahoo strike, their initial run is breathtaking. They’re able to peel off 400 yards of line in a heartbeat.

I find most of my wahoo along the Continental Shelf, in depths between 180 and 600 feet. The best months are from November through April. These awesome, beautiful fish average between 40 and 60 pounds. But we’ve had several over 100 pounds, including one that weighed 121.8 pounds. My personal best was 107.4 pounds.
